WOODSTOCK ARTISTS ASSOCIATION AND
MUSEUM

4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Main Gallery -
Small Works: These small gems, no bigger than 12x12 including the frame, may
take up little space, but their impact by our talented members will be huge.
Opening reception will be held on November 11th, the exhibition will run
through December 3rd. The opening will start at 4:00pm and will run until
6:00pm at which time the gallery will close for public viewing. We will
reopen at 6:30 when we invite you to join us for a special screening of
“Hervey White and the Maverick Experiment” by Cambiz Khosravi. Khosravi is
the creator of Plough to Easel, a documentary about the Woodstock art
colony, and has been compiling filmed interviews and footage relating to
Hervey White and the Maverick artists for decades. There will be an
admission charge of $10. Middle Gallery: Active Member Walls
Featured artists - Zeev Willy Neuman, Pablo Shine, Steve Sax and Nita Sax.
Solo Gallery. Angela
Gaffney-Smith will exhibit her figural drawings and monotypes. Her work
offers the viewer a glimpse of fleeting moments and reflective poses.
Drawing on family as a foundation and preserving images in ink and pastel,
the artist presents her contemplative side of life. Each image presents
either contemporary themes, both secular and spiritual, or timeless motifs,
like a mother and child. The portrayals of dancers in this show are inspired
by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre where the artist’s son, Gabriel, is a corps
member. Angela states, “I am inspired by the little vignettes in medieval
illuminations, in Books of Hours, which offered illustrations for
meditation. These black and white monotypes are straight forward; without
the lure of color, the lines, subjects, and gestures become the focus. But I
like to play with unconventional colors too, to snap out of the
pre-conceived notion of what coloring something is supposed to be.”
Towbin Museum Wing. The exhibition The Maverick Continues opens November
11th in the Towbin Museum Wing and will remain on view through January 7,
2007. This exhibition, the second installment of our celebration of Hervey
White’s colony of the arts, will feature artists who lived in the Maverick
neighborhood from the 1940s through the 1980s. Philip Guston and Raoul Hague
are two of the most prominent artists and will be featured with special
loans along with works from the WAAM Permanent Collection. Works by Alison
Ames, Gwen Davies, Agnes Hart, Jolyon Hofsted, Nicholas Marsicano, Josef
Presser, and Anton Refregier will also be featured.
Youth Exhibition Space (YES!). It All Started with Blue: Third grade
students from Woodstock elementary were introduced to the artwork of
historic Woodstock artist Carl Walters during a fieldtrip to the WAAM. Carl
Walters’ career as a ceramic sculptor began with an obsession to recreate
“that indescribable blue so often achieved by the ancient Egyptians in their
pottery.” Once he got it right, the blue became his trademark known as
“Walters Blue.” He was best known for sculpting animals that were treated
with stylized patterns influenced by the Egyptians and the arts of the
Middle East.
SPECIAL EVENTS.
“MIRROR, MIRROR” A very special Found Objects auction to benefit the WAAM.
On November 18th, our talented local and regional artists will transform the
humble mirror, in all shapes and sizes, into fanciful creations. Become a
collector of original Woodstock art and help the WAAM at the same time!!
Preview starts at 4:30 and the live auction begins at 6:30pm.
FAME: (Fabulous Art Monday Evenings) - Our ongoing series presented by Prue
See, our Gallery Manager, Staats Fassoldt and Lois Linet. On November 20th,
Manny Bromberg, a noted painter, sculptor, and educator who taught at SUNY
New Paltz for 25 years, will talk about his years in the arts, about what’s
hot and what’s not, and why. A Woodstock resident, Manny was an acquaintance
of Picasso, Braque, and Cocteau, and worked extensively with Buckminster
Fuller.
FIGURE DRAWING SESSIONS - Ongoing sessions are held the first and third
Thursday of the month from 7:00 -
9:30pm. Join us for a relaxing drawing session in an inspirational setting.

2:00pm - Memorial for Saul
Bennett. The Woodstock Poetry Society will host a memorial event
remembering local Woodstock poet Saul Bennett when it meets at the Woodstock
Town Hall, 76 Tinker Street. WPS meetings are held the 2nd Saturday of
every month. All meetings are free and open to the public. Saul Bennett
passed away suddenly on August 6th from a heart attack. A large selection of
Saul's poetry is now available online at
http://www.woodstockpoetry.com/press_release/20061111.html so that you
may read some of Saul's work and so that you may select a poem of Saul's
that you might be interested in reading at this memorial if you would like.
The event will be hosted by Woodstock area poet Phillip Levine. We expect
Saul's wife, Joan, and children Charles and Lizzy, to be attending.
Please contact Phillip Levine (845)246-8565 pprod@mindspring.com or Will
Nixon (845)679-5853 will@willnixon.com if you are interested in sharing work
by or about our missed poet and friend Saul.

4:00 - 6:00 pm Opening Party
for Main and Middle Gallery. Social Comment: a show that expresses the
wide range of social, political and cultural perspectives that Woodstock is
well known for. Come to our typically high energy opening party from 4-6,
but do stay after the crowds have dwindled and view the work at a peaceful
pace. Open until 8:00 for Second Saturdays on October 14th, the exhibition
will run through November 11th.
Youth Exhibition Space (YES!). Michael Asbill, Museum Educator,
brings the fourth grade students from the Woodstock Day School to present
their creations resulting from activities focused around the work of Hannah
Small. She was a sculptor who infused her figurative style with great
imagination – it will be a treat to see how our younger generation took
inspiration from Hannah.
Solo Gallery. Recent Paintings by Chris Gonyea – DEEP FOREST. Chris
continues his on-going investigations of forest images with a new exhibition
at the WAAM. His oils on canvas are much more than simple observations of
nature, but instead dig deeper into realms beyond surface reality. This
group of large paintings was designed with the octagonal shape of the WAAM
solo gallery in mind. The intention is to surround the viewer completely in
forest as if one is somehow submerged in a deep thicket or lost in the
woods. Chris Gonyea has been an active member of the WAAM for many years.
This is his first solo show in Woodstock and he is proud to bring his work
back to the WAAM and its prestigious history.
Towbin Museum Wing The Maverick: Hervey White’s Colony of the Arts:
A must-see show for anyone who doesn’t know the rich, extensive history of
the founders and subsequent artists of the original Maverick art colony. For
those who are familiar with these artists, it is an absolute treat to be in
the presence of the Maverick spirit. This show profiles art from the early
1900’s through the 40’s; a second installment will be on display starting
November 11th through the end of December with work from the 1940’s through
the 80’s. Curated by Josephine Bloodgood, Director of the Permanent
Collection and Tom Wolf, art historian and scholar from Bard.
SPECIAL EVENTS. FAME; (Fabulous Art Monday Evenings)
Our ongoing series presented by Prue See, our Gallery Manager, Staats
Fassoldt and Lois Linet, all amazing artists. On October 16th, from
7:00-9:00pm, we will present Will Cotton who will be showing slides of his
work. Will is an Ulster County native who has reached a high level of
success as an artist, achieving his painterly style through bravura
brushwork. He is very well known in NYC but less so in Ulster County. After
high school in New Paltz, Will went to Cooper Union and received a seminal
fellowship at Beaux Arts in Rouen. Upon winding his way through several NYC
Galleries, he has found a home at Mary Boone's, a giant in the city of
giants. Rumor has it that all his work is sold before his shows open!

12pm-5pm: (Ongoing exhibitions till August 20, 2006) PENTIMENTO, a solo
ehxhibition of work by Preston Wadley (Shoreline, WA) Preston Wadley
incorporates books, found imagery, objects, and painting in his
sculptural creations, which explore African American history and
imaginatively reflect on the connection between the past and an
ever-evolving present. While the book pages themselves are unreadable,
the visual narrative created by the artist's juxtaposition of
metaphorical objects and the found portraits reveal the intensity and
intimacy of lifetimes filled with story, allegory, history, and memory.
"Family Album" curated by Kate Menconeri & Ariel Shanberg "Family Album"
presents nine international artists who seek meaning and connection
through family imagery. Going beyond impulses in which family is
traditionally represented in photographs, these image-makers approach
the subject as both distant observers and emotional participants, with
an unflinching gaze.
8pm - Please join us for an intimate evening with internationally
exhibited photographer, Ernestine Ruben. An artist and teacher
for three decades, Ruben is a spirited leader whose emphasis in teaching

play by Irene O’Garden. Author, Irene O'Garden will join us
for a post-performance discussion. Trude is a world-famous
photojournalist who returns from her latest assignment to discover that her
studio has burned down and with it her life's work and art collection. All
is lost except for the last few rolls of film she shot. Her assignment had
been to create portraits of contemporary American women from all walks of
life – from ad executive to mid-west mom to caregiver to construction worker
– each character on fire with passion, fear, self-discovery and shopping!
Twelve lyrical, funny and passionate portraits come to life in this
beautifully-written play perfectly suiting our gifted cast of Noni Connor,
Asta Hansen and Nicola Sheara. Women On Fire began life in the Hudson Valley
as a series of performance poems by the play's author, and came together as
a play in 2000 when it was performed at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New
York City. The New York Times describes it as “Bewitching…astounding…
heartbreaking.” Directed by Wallace Norman.
